The Party’s Over for Fashion’s Night Out

Lights Out for Fashion's Night Out

Lights Out for Fashion’s Night Out

Fashion’s Night Out which was designed to increase interest in fashion during tough economic times will go on hiatus this year.

A decision was made to cancel the event after huge crowds flooded the streets of SoHo in September and smashed the windshield of a car while its driver sat inside during Fashion’s Night Out festivities.

The annual shopping event has been part of New York Fashion Week each September since 2009, when it was created in response to the recession. It was masterminded by Vogue’s Anna Wintour and championed by Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the Council of Fashion Designers of America.

The event expanded to 500 U.S. cities and 30 cities globally. Celebrities mingled with shoppers, champagne was served and designers sang karaoke and played pingpong to drum up business for the important fall retail season.

CFDA CEO Steven Kolb said that he was proud of what had been accomplished. However, there was grumbling from some stores and designers that it cost money they weren’t sure they saw back in sales.

“Fashion’s Night Out will go on hiatus in the United States in 2013 in order to enable retailers to channel their resources toward strategies more in keeping with their current priorities,” a statement on the website for the event occurring in more than 500 cities nationwide says.

As Women’s Wear Daily first reported, organizers also cited the improved economy as a reason for the cancellation. Vogue magazine, the Council of Fashion Designers of America and New York’s tourism agency launched FNO in 2009 to give the industry a boost.

Fashion’s Night Out will still be held in select international cities.

Israel Bans Undeweight Models

January 3, 2013

thin-776705-412x400Israel’s new law banning too-skinny models from appearing in advertisements went into effect. Under the groundbreaking law, any model with a body mass index (BMI) under 18.5 (an indicator of malnutrition, according to the World Health Organization) will be prevented from working.

Even before Israel’s law passed, both Madrid and Milan banned models with a BMI under 18.5 from their fashion weeks. In New York, however, no such strict restrictions have been issued; and according to CFDA CEO Steven Kolb, none will. Kolb confirmed to WSJ that the CFDA has no plans to push for a U.S. law banning models under a certain weight or BMI. “We never had an approach of mandate or enforce,” he said. “We created awareness and education.”

What Anne Hathaway Really Thinks of her Pixie Cut

December 8, 2012

Pixie Cut: Hack or Hot?Divabetic’s December Diva Inspiration, Anne Hathaway’s December Vogue cover shows off the very short hair that’s become her signature as of late.

Do you think her pixie cut is … HACK or HOT?!!!

The magazine story, of course, is about the hair — and her teeth and her body weight and the rest of the physical changes it took to become Fantine for the upcoming film “Les Misérables.” Hathaway famously dropped  25 pounds for the role, prompting rumors of a “starvation diet.”

“I was in such a state of deprivation—physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn’t react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed [...] It took me weeks till I felt like myself again.”

Talking her new pixie hairstyle… Anne Hathaway says that when she saw herself with her new pixie cut, which she sports in the new “Les Miserables” film, she thought she looked like her gay brother.

“When I eventually looked in the mirror I just thought I looked like my gay brother,” she told reporters at the “Les Miserables” screening.

Hathaway, who lived in a New Jersey suburb as a child, has both an older and younger brother.

Hathaway told British GQ magazine in an interview published in its March 2010 issue that they were raised Catholic, but that “the whole family converted to episcopalianism after my elder brother came out. Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother? So I’m… nothing. [Expletive] it, I’m forming. I’m a work in progress.”

Divabetic SumnmerNow in its fourth year Fashion’s Night Out promises to be bigger than ever with more than 4,500 outlets in 20 different countries hosting events simultaneously on Thursday September 6, 2012.

Divas, it’s time to “GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!”

New York, of course, is where it all started, and the city doesn’t disappoint, with an array of events to coincide with the start of fashion week.

Vogue Fashion Director Grace Coddington has created an exclusive line for Balenciaga in honor of the event.

Macy’s will feature  appearances from Kourtney Kardashian‘s long-term beau Scott Disick, and Barneys will become a buzzing street fair with salsa lessons for all.

The fun is not limited to the East Coast either. Over in LA Kendall Jenner will be kicking off proceedings at the Berverly Center while the Porsche store on Wilshire Boulevard will be serving up free glasses of bubbly all evening.

Launched by Anna Wintour in New York in 2009, the global initiative sponsored by Vogue and the CFDA was aimed at giving the fashion industry a boost during tough economic times and this year a special T-shirt will be on sale to help raise funds for the New York City AIDS fund.

Vogue’s New Health Initiative – Underweight Models Are OUT!

May 16, 2012

British Vogue launched a brand-new Health Initiative across 19 editions of Vogue. The initiative aims to address the problem of unhealthy body image and behaviors amongst models, particularly those who pose for magazines.

The new initiative includes a six-point pledge agreed upon by all 19 Vogueeditors-in-chief. According to the Telegraph, these include the following:

* We will not knowingly work with models under the age of 16 or who appear to have an eating disorder. We will work with models who, in our view, are healthy and help to promote a healthy body image* We will ask agents not to knowingly send us underage girls and casting directors to check IDs when casting shoots, shows and campaigns.

* We encourage designers to consider the consequences of unrealistically small sample sizes of their clothing, which limits the range of women who can be photographed in their clothes, and encourages the use of extremely thin models.

As British Vogue notes, the stated goals of the initiative hew closely to those of theCFDA’s Health Guidelines, which include a minimum age requirement (16 years) and a commitment to preventing eating disorders through education.

The practical innovation of Vogue‘s Health Initiative, however, is a focus on magazines rather than the runway. The past efforts of the CFDA (and Britain’s British Fashion Council) were only effective to the point of addressing problems during Fashion Week. With Vogue‘s new move, models working year-round in photo spreads will meet the same requirements — and get the same help.

It also extends the impact on viewers, as arguably more women read fashion magazines than watch runway shows.

Of course, as long as Photoshop exists, those over-16, non-anorexic models could still be made to look younger and skinnier than they really are. Perhaps a pledge to limit Photoshop, made by Glamour and other magazines, will be next on Vogue‘s agenda?

Read more about The Health Initiative at Vogue.co.uk and Telegraph.co.uk.

Ryan Lochte Makes Vogue Magazine’s Cover

May 14, 2012

Vogue magazineThe June 2012 issue, Anna Wintour has permitted a Ryan Lochte to grace to cover, making him just the fourth man to ever cover the Vogue.

Ryan Lochte, a six-time Olympic medalist swimmer, is joined by Hope Solo and Serena Williams, both wearing ruched retro swimsuits (string bikinis are for Sports Illustrated covers). With the super buff Lochte photographed mid-stride, sporting a lady on each arm, the Annie Leibovitz-snapped cover has a strong “Baywatch” vibe. We half expected to see a bright red rescue board trailing behind them…

The theme of the cover, of course, is the 2012 London Olympics, which have already gotten a fair amount of attention from the fashion industry. Stella McCartney designed the blue and white “kit” (uniform) for Team GB (Great Britain), while Giorgio Armani did the honors for Team Italy. The U.S. uniforms are designed by that paragon of Americana, Ralph Lauren.

Although no one seems to be wearing much of any uniform on the June cover of Vogue, save for some swimsuits. Do you like the sunny, sporty cover or is it a bit too “Baywatch”-y for ya?
