Hungry Grocery Shoppers Buy More Junk Food

May 18, 2013

Grocery shopping while hungry can lead to out of control snacking and an entire week’s worth of unhealthy eating according to new research from Cornell University.

The Cornell researchers followed 68 shoppers as they clicked through an online grocery site that offered a mix of healthy choices — including fruits, vegetables and lean meats — and unhealthy, high calorie snack foods like candy, chips and soda.

The shoppers who didn’t eat for four to five hours before filling their virtual food baskets bought the same number of items as the shoppers who snacked on crackers before clicking away. But the hungry shoppers selected more processed junk foods, 23 percent more on average. A follow up field test where researchers secretly followed shoppers who hadn’t eaten for several hours found much the same.

“You don’t buy more, but you do buy more of the wrong type of calories,” noted Brian Wansink, one of the study’s lead investigators and author of the new book, Slim By Design. “You buy things like cereal, snacks, chips, candy and other convenience foods that require no preparation and that you can eat right away.”

Previous research demonstrated that fasting for up to 18 hours can drive shoppers to make less diet-friendly choices and spend more cash overall. But this is the first study to show you don’t have to be terribly hungry for your judgment to be affected.

Even just a few hours without eating is enough to send you in search of a quick fix to satisfy hunger. And, as Wansink noted, this is often the state shoppers find themselves in as they rush to the market after a long day of work.

Unfortunately, the effect goes well beyond buying a candy bar to tide you over on the drive home, Wansink said. Shoppers who impulsively purchase ready-to-eat, low nutrition foods set themselves up for repeated diet disasters because they fill their pantries with junk instead of healthier fare.

“It ends up cursing the rest of your week because you bought way too much of the convenience foods and not enough of the good stuff. So now there is less healthy food for you to choose from at home.”

Americans seem to be snacking more than ever. On average, Americans enjoy 2.3 snacks per day according to the latest poll by the Hartman Group. Nearly 30 percent of people said they snack impulsively while another 17 percent reach for a snack when they don’t feel like cooking. Almost 60 percent of respondents said choosing a healthy snack is important to them, yet the two most popular snacks choices are chips and soda.

Wansink said the obvious moral here is don’t shop hungry.

“It helps to plan your visit to the supermarket and if you’re hungry, eat an apple before you go,” he said.

Bob Greene’s Top 5 Weight Loss Blockers

April 17, 2013
Bob Greene

Bob Greene

Over the past decade,  Oprah’s trainer, Bob Greene has noticed that people tend to make the same mistakes over and over again when it comes to losing weight and staying healthy. Are you making the same mistakes?

Here are Bob Greene’s Top 5 Weight Loss Blockers

1. They work out simply to burn calories. What matters more is exercise intensity. Vigorous exercise dulls your appetite, while moderate exercise stimulates it.

2. They strength train with two-pound dumbbells. Heavier weights will help you build bone mass. You should be able to complete only 8 to 10 repetitions of each exercise.

3. They don’t think about how relationships affect their motivation. If you’ve got a strong support network, you’re less likely to de-stress by crashing in front of the TV or eating poorly.

4. They don’t pay attention to the hunger scale. Imagine a scale from one to five — one being full, and five being ravenous. If you’re hitting a three — your stomach’s grumbling, you’re physically dragging — it’s time to eat. Any lower than that, and you’re eating to fill an emotional need, not a physical one.

5. They underestimate the power of 80 percent. People tend to have an all-or-nothing attitude when it comes to living healthy. But if you can put these tips into practice even 80 percent of the time, you’re still going to be successful.

Emotional Overeating by Ellen N. Resnick

March 8, 2013
Divabetic - Ellen Resnick

Divabetic – Ellen Resnick

It’s hard to believe it’s National Heart Month again.

I’m joined by Taylor, who you may recall from our popular YouTube video “Shrink and Move: Small Steps That Lead To Big Rewards”.
http://healthywage.wordpress.com/2011/11/14/shrink-and-move-small-steps-that-lead-to-big-rewards/

Taylor has many reasons to monitor his health closely. He has a family history of cardiovascular disease and he has Type 1 diabetes. This year Taylor wants to remind people that…”KNOWING YOUR NUMBERS” is the first step towards empowering yourself to reach and maintain your optimal health. You can’t change what you don’t acknowledge (remember Dr. Phil)? Choose to be the driver of your health—that’s freedom!

We all have important health related numbers to monitor and use as data points for our wellbeing. They include your weight, cholesterol, Blood Glucose / HbA1C levels (if you have diabetes).

Taylor uses a really simple mix to manage and motivate himself towards a healthier and fuller lifestyle:

  • technology,
  •  his doctor’s input, and
  • his own inner “barometer.”

Prior to truly accepting and managing his condition, Taylor often found himself in a state of turmoil—he didn’t know how to live life as a diabetic with a heart that could be a ticking time bomb. He became literally imprisoned, by his disease.
With the help and guidance of his doctors and family he decided to break free and take back control of his life.

Through education, information and “knowing his numbers” Taylor learned that there was another, more liberating way to live with his conditions. It’s no longer the “I have to be perfect” mentality with regards to his health related goals (and other things too). Through that understanding he no longer feels guilty, frustrated, or that he’s being a “bad” person when he decides to reward himself with a special treat.
Taylor knows that striving to be perfect is the perfect set up for self-sabotage and self-loathing. He also knows the kind of stress that kind of thinking can put on ourselves, all of which is the opposite of mind/body wellness.

Believe it or not, he says “it’s a lot simpler and much more enjoyable to learn about and accept your particular health situation, and ultimately get out and get after a better way of living with it”.

Taylor did it—so can you!

Go out and get the support you need to take yourself out of those self- imposed shackles.

Don’t you deserve one get of jail free card in this game of life?

A special thank you to Taylor for sharing his health journey and wisdom with us.

Why You Should See The Film, Soul Food Junkies

January 29, 2013
Soul Food Junkie

Soul Food Junkie

Years ago, when I first started Divabetic, a full-day of ‘food programming’ would never have happened. Initially I didn’t want to focus Divabetic’s outreach efforts on food because I thought it was already being ‘covered to death’ by educators, hospitals and major diabetes organizations.  Why did Divabetic have to talk about it? But I quickly realized that I didn’t agree with how many of these patient resources were choosing to deal with the topic. I felt then like I do now that the discussing topic ‘food’ isn’t just about ‘what you’re eating,’ it’s also important to talk about ‘what’s eating you.’

My former boss, Luther Vandross had a very public battle with his weight for years. In the 13 plus years that I worked for him I witnessed him gain and lose an excess of over 100 pounds at least seven times. It was difficult to watch someone, who was so successful in their chosen field, continually  fail time after time at managing their weight. ‘Heartbreaking’ is the only way to describe it.

Tonight’s podcast, Serve, Taste or Trash! Game  (6 PM, EST on blogtalkradio) is about letting people talk back about the foods they love and more importantly the foods they love to hate. Trust me, Luther knew what he needed to eat to manage his type 2 diabetes but he just didn’t want to eat it. And he’s not alone. I’ve heard these sentiments expressed by both men and women at various Divabetic Club meetings for years.  The fact that so many of the foods that ‘we love’ so much are killing us makes the matter even more complex.

Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game

Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game

This is why I’m excited to see the film ‘Soul Food Junkies’ with my good friend, Catherine Schuller.  Inspired by his own family’s complex relationship with “soul food” — fried chicken, ribs, macaroni and cheese, peach cobbler, and the whole panoply of down-home foods made with grease, sugar, and love — acclaimed filmmaker Byron Hurt asks whether this diet is nurturing or destroying the African American community. With humor and heart, Hurt questions the effects of “soul food” on the health of not only African Americans, but all who guiltily consume this most comforting of American comfort foods

Baffled by his dad’s unwillingness to change his traditional soul food diet in the face of a health crisis, Hurt sets out to learn more about this rich culinary tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. He discovers that the love affair that his dad and his community have with soul food is deep-rooted, complex, and in some tragic cases, deadly.

Through candid interviews with soul food cooks, historians, and scholars, as well as doctors, family members, and everyday people, Soul Food Junkies blends history, humor, and heartwarming stories to place this culinary tradition under the microscope. Both the consequences and the benefits of soul food are carefully addressed. So too is the issue of low access to quality food in black communities, which makes it difficult for some black people to eat healthy. In the end, Hurt determines whether or not black people are addicted to this food tradition that has its origins in West Africa and the black south, yet is loved all over the world.

I’ll be sharing my review of Soul Food Junkies on this blog tomorrow.

Watch News Yorkers try to identify the healthiest treat from three Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game choices bought at a convenience store. You might be surprised by the results.

Fructose Proven to Make You Hungrier

January 2, 2013

XA sugar used in biscuits, ice cream and other processed foods is responsible for increasing people’s appetites causing obesity rates to soar, scientists have warned.

A new study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, using brain scans has shown that fructose – which is used to sweeten soft drinks and junk food – is more harmful than other types of sugar.

Pure fructose is found in fresh fruit, fruit juice and jam. However, it also sneaks into our diet through the high-fructose corn syrup used in food manufacturing.

Now brain scans have shown that fructose failed to produce feelings of satiety and fullness, whereas glucose did.

This may be because it has a different effect on blood flow around the brain region that regulates appetite.

And the number of calories in food might not be as important as the type of sugar it contains. A cake made with fructose could do more harm than one made with glucose.

Fresh fruit contains relatively low levels of fructose – and the risks are outweighed by health benefits.

The Yale researchers concluded: ‘Increases in fructose consumption have paralleled the increasing prevalence of obesity, and high-fructose diets are thought to promote weight gain and insulin resistance. Reprinted from Mail One

Mr. Divabetic’s colorful world famous ‘Fruit Suit’ inspired this year’s collection of great gift ideas for people living with diabetes. From the deep purple jewel tones of eggplant to the vibrant zesty yellow shades of melons, you’ll find all types of gadgets, books and gizmos to keep you happy and healthy this coming year.

We hope our rainbow colored Favorite Things List for 2012 inspires you to eat more fruits and vegetables.  Eating plenty of vegetables and fruits can help you ward off heart disease and stroke, control blood pressure, prevent some types of cancer, avoid a painful intestinal ailment called diverticulitis, and guard against cataract and macular degeneration, two common causes of vision loss. One of the healthiest eating habits you can foster in your family is to make vegetables the centerpiece of your holiday meals and let the other food groups accompany them.

You can’t improve what you can’t measure, and the Fitbit Aria is currently our favorite device for keeping tabs on weight-related health stats. Your detailed weight, BMI, and body fat percentage graphs are automatically uploaded via WiFi to your private Fitbit account, where you can monitor your results with the latest fad diet or get more meaningful (and actionable) longer-term trends about your body — something you just can’t easily do with a traditional scale. And unlike the Withings wireless scale (which costs $30 less), the Aria is smaller, feels sturdier, has better, more stable feet, and has a much better site for viewing your progress. With an easy set-up process, the scale will automatically recognize up to eight users.  $129.95. Free shipping at Fitbit.com

Diagnosis To Diva: Lorraine

December 3, 2012
Diagnosis to DIVA

Diagnosis to DIVA

Divabetic’s upcoming free Diabetes Rountable podcast inspired by Anne Hathaway  features special guest,  Lorraine’s ‘Diagnosis To DIVA’ story to inspire you to stay healthy and upbeat about your self-care.

Here’s Lorraine’s story:
I live on Long Island, NY and I have had diabetes for over 30 years.   I was actually diagnosed on a routine health exam for a new job in a hospital.  In the beginning, I believe I was a Type 2, even though I was started on insulin immediately.

I wasn’t totally surprised, since it ran in my family.  My paternal grandmother had diabetes, and I can remember, as a child, that my father had to give her injections, because she had suffered a major debilitating stroke.  I can remember the glass syringes being in the refrigerator, and how we had to boil them to sterilize them.  I really didn’t totally understand what it all meant, but I knew it was serious, and I knew it required work.

I was lucky that my new job was in the pharmacy department of the hospital, and the staff was wonderful to me when they found out about my diagnosis.  They taught me how to inject myself, and supplied me with needles and insulin.  Unfortunately, what they didn’t tell me was, how to deal with low blood sugars, and how to fight the battle of weight.

I had been overweight literally all my life, and now, with this news, I knew it was going to be even harder to control my weight.  During the first 5 years after my diagnosis I did manage to lose over 60 pounds, and I was able to get off insulin for a few years.  But as I got older, that “honeymoon” ended, and now I am insulin dependent.

It has been a challenge for me to adjust to the changes that are happening as I am getting older.  But the positive thing is, with all the advances in diabetes care, we live in an age where there is much we can do.  I now use an insulin pump, and that helps me keep in much better control.  My last visit to my endocrinologist was very successful.  I was told I have none of the complications of diabetes.  I attribute that to a strong commitment to self-care, and belng willing, even when it is difficult, to make good decisions.  I watch what I eat, try to control portions, get a bit of exercise most days, and most importantly, I’m not afraid to talk about it, and tell people when I need help, or when I am struggling.  That helps me stay focused and positive.

I keep regular visits with my primary care doctor, endocrinologist, podiatrist, optometrist, dentist, and therapist.  They all listen and help me to move forward when get stuck, or need some extra motivation.  It is extremely important to me that I have health care professionals that I can talk to, and who will listen to my concerns.  I am determined to remain complication-free for as long as I can, and I will be 61 in a few weeks!  I am very proud of this accomplishment!

I was proud to contribute to Dr. Bev’s book, My Sweet Life, and it was inspiring to read the stories of the other women who share the journey.  (My Sweet Life: Successful Women with Diabetes is available at Amazon.com)

My biggest struggle, as always, is still with my weight.   I am told that it is more important to control the A1c, blood pressure, and cholesterol than the weight, so that is where I keep my focus.  And those numbers are great.  I often joke that I should carry my blood test results in my wallet, to prove that I am healthy, in spite of my weight, because the world does tend to judge you harshly if you are overweight, especially if you have diabetes.  Many people will choose to believe that I am not trying hard enough, but I know I am!  And my test results prove it!  So if I had any advice to others it would be exactly that.  Concentrate on what is important, and that is, staying in control, making good decisions, being open and willing to put in the work, and you will be healthy and lead a good life with diabetes!

If I have a favorite Diva, I think it would be Vanessa Williams, because she has overcome many difficult situations in her life.  She was the first woman of color to be crowned Miss America, only to have scandal force her to give up her crown.  But she reinvented herself and launched a successful singing career, as well as becoming a respected actress.  And she recently admitted that she was the victim of domestic abuse, which is a cause I am very involved with.  I now do a great deal of work with women who are survivors of domestic abuse and violence. #12divasofchristmas

Soda Drinking Leads to Obesity

September 22, 2012

Divabetic SummerNew research powerfully strengthens the case against soda and other sugary drinks as culprits in the obesity epidemic.

A huge, decades-long study involving more than 33,000 Americans has yielded the first clear proof that drinking sugary beverages interacts with genes that affect weight, amplifying a person’s risk of obesity beyond what it would be from heredity alone.

This means that such drinks are especially harmful to people with genes that predispose them to weight gain. And most of us have at least some of these genes.

In addition, two other major experiments have found that giving children and teens calorie-free alternatives to the sugary drinks they usually consume leads to less weight gain.

Collectively, the results strongly suggest that sugary drinks cause people to pack on the pounds, independent of other unhealthy behavior such as overeating and getting too little exercise, scientists say.

That adds weight to the push for taxes, portion limits like the one just adopted in New York City, and other policies to curb consumption of soda, juice drinks and sports beverages sweetened with sugar.

Soda lovers do get some good news: Sugar-free drinks did not raise the risk of obesity in these studies.

“You may be able to fool the taste” and satisfy a sweet tooth without paying a price in weight, said an obesity researcher with no role in the studies, Rudy Leibel of Columbia University.

The studies were being presented Friday at an obesity conference in San Antonio and were published online by the New England Journal of Medicine.

She’s Gaga for Second Helpings

September 20, 2012

Divabetic SummerWeight gain is no fun for anyone especially if it’s caught on camera! So why is everyone obsessed over celebrities gaining weight?!

Apparently, Lady Gaga, like screen legend Sophia Loren, can credit spaghetti for her new curves.  Diva fans will may recall actress, Sophia Loren once said,  ”Everything you see I owe to spaghetti.”

Lady Gaga started her new tour in Amsterdam by admitting she has put on 25 pounds, Gaga says she’s not concerned; she’s an Italian girl from New York who loves to eat.

“I’m dieting right now, because I gained, like, 25 pounds,” Gaga told radio host Elvis Duran when she called into his show just before she hit the road. “And you know I really don’t feel bad about it, not even for a second. I have to be on such a strict diet constantly. It’s hard because it’s a quite vigorous show, so I tend to bulk up, get muscular, and I really don’t like that. So I’m trying to find a new balance.”

Cruel critics have suggested that Gaga’s weight gain is the result of the amount of alcohol she consumes, but Gaga begs to differ, confirming it’s from her dad’s Italian cooking.

“I love eating pasta and pizza,” says Gaga. “I’m a New York Italian girl. That’s why I have been staying out of New York. My father [Joe Germanotta] opened a restaurant. It’s so amazing … it’s so freaking delicious, but I’m telling you I gain five pounds every time I go in there. So my dad wants me to eat at the restaurant, and I’m, like, I’ve got to go where I can drink green juice.”

Why Is My Insulin Making Me FAT?!!!

September 19, 2012

Divabetic SummerNY Fashion Week just ended with our friend, Evetta Petty’s fabulous Spring 2013 Hat Fashion Show and we could barely fit into anything!

Even though we skipped dessert all week, ate salad after salad and drank nothing but water,  we still could only squeeze into a pair of our size 4′s and not our beautiful size 0 Rag & Bone jeans.

We were hoping to look like Heidi Klum in Jordache or Brooke Shields in her Calvins but instead we ended up looking like we were wearing a pair of “mom jeans.”

What gives?!! Are we the only girl in the world (Thank you, Rihanna)  who feels like insulin is making them FAT!!!!

Apparently the answer is ‘NO’

We found out that many people  gain weight when they begin taking insulin. The reason for this is when your blood sugar was too high, many of the calories you ate were flushed out of your system in your urine. Since insulin therapy turns those calories into energy for your body’s cells, all those lost calories are now being absorbed, which leads to weight gain.

Weight gain may also be related to other complex functions of insulin in the body related to how cells use fats and proteins.

The good news is eating healthy foods and staying physically active every day can help prevent unwanted weight gain. THANK YOU! We’re making a date with the treadmill because were definitely not skipping our insulin dosages to ward off weight gain. It’s stupid.
