Kelly Osbourne’s Diet Secrets

April 24, 2013

kelly-osbourne-seizure-details-2(1)__oPt“Once I learned how to work out right and eat right, it’s one of those things that you just have to commit to a life change rather than being on a diet. Because a diet doesn’t work. You lose weight and you stop it and it will all come back. So you just have to take baby steps, commit to something and stay true to it,” said Fashion Police star, Kelly Osbourne.

The 28-year-old, who recently referred to herself as a “former fat person,” chatted with HuffPost Celebrity about her 70 pound weight loss program.

So, how does she maintain her incredible shape?

“And everything has to be in moderation and to find that place is easier said than done. It really is,” she continued. “Everyone’s like, ‘Oh it’s all about moderation!’ I’m like, well what are you going to do with a plate of french fries in front of you, moderate? No. You’re going to eat every single one of them!”

Speaking of french fries, Osbourne says she indulges in whatever “cheat meals” she wants, admitting that she never feels guilty about satisfying a craving.

“I always cheat,” she laughed, adding, “Pizza, I have to say …”

Osbourne recently confessed to Self magazine that she even finds herself chowing down on pizza in the morning. “I eat my fattiest meal in the a.m,” she revealed in the May issue. “If I’m craving pizza, I’ll have it for breakfast, salad for lunch, and oatmeal for dinner.”

Bob Greene’s Top 5 Weight Loss Blockers

April 17, 2013
Bob Greene

Bob Greene

Over the past decade,  Oprah’s trainer, Bob Greene has noticed that people tend to make the same mistakes over and over again when it comes to losing weight and staying healthy. Are you making the same mistakes?

Here are Bob Greene’s Top 5 Weight Loss Blockers

1. They work out simply to burn calories. What matters more is exercise intensity. Vigorous exercise dulls your appetite, while moderate exercise stimulates it.

2. They strength train with two-pound dumbbells. Heavier weights will help you build bone mass. You should be able to complete only 8 to 10 repetitions of each exercise.

3. They don’t think about how relationships affect their motivation. If you’ve got a strong support network, you’re less likely to de-stress by crashing in front of the TV or eating poorly.

4. They don’t pay attention to the hunger scale. Imagine a scale from one to five — one being full, and five being ravenous. If you’re hitting a three — your stomach’s grumbling, you’re physically dragging — it’s time to eat. Any lower than that, and you’re eating to fill an emotional need, not a physical one.

5. They underestimate the power of 80 percent. People tend to have an all-or-nothing attitude when it comes to living healthy. But if you can put these tips into practice even 80 percent of the time, you’re still going to be successful.

Why Can’t Americans Lose Weight?

April 12, 2013
Fat Letters

Fat Letters

American children and adults are eating fewer calories, yet obesity rates haven’t improved, according to a series of recent reports from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That means it’s going to take more than counting calories for the country to slim down.

Americans may simply be eating the wrong types of calories. It’s important to focus on where your calories are coming from, and fill your diet with minimally processed plant-based foods as much as possible. Cutting out soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks can also make a big difference.

“I would recommend that people follow dietary guidelines, which means eating a healthy diet,” said Bethene Ervin, PhD, a nutritional epidemiologist with the National Center for Health Statistics at the CDC. “This includes limiting fat intake and consuming lots of fruits and vegetables. That would be the best way to beat obesity.”

Remember that it’s not a matter of giving up your favorite foods. It’s about eating wisely. When it comes to a healthy diet, make sure that every calorie counts.

Are Eggs ealthy or Unhealthy?

April 1, 2013

A recent study shows that egg consumption had no effect on the overall blood cholesterol levels of 115 healthy adults. What’s more, another recent study found some evidence that eating whole eggs increases HDL — the heart-protective, “good” cholesterol.

“There are much bigger problems in the American diet than cholesterol,” says Drew Ramsey, M.D. an assistant clinical professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, who studies the connection between lifestyle behaviors like diet and psychological health. “There’s not data to suggest that it should be at the top of people’s worries about food choices. Everyone’s in agreement about that: The real problem with diabetes and obesity is eating too much processed food.”

And there are several nutrients specific to the egg yolk that help promote overall health. Egg yolks are one of the richest dietary sources of the B-complex vitamin choline, which is associated with better neurological function and reduced inflammation. There’s also evidence that dietary choline helps with fetal brain development when pregnant women eat it. Another side benefit of a diet rich in choline is, well, happiness.

The Shocking Amount of Hidden Calories in Cooking Sprays

March 31, 2013
Divabetic

Divabetic

Have you ever looked at the nutritional label on a can of cooking spray?

Cooking sprays list nutritional information based on ridiculously tiny serving sizes. One of the most popular, Pam, boasts zero calories and zero fat on the label of its original canola cooking spray. But that information refers to a spray lasting just a quarter of a second.

“That’s just not the way people use them,” Mr. Michael Jacobson, the  executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest,  said. “It’s probably impossible to spray for a third of a second. We suggested six seconds might be kind of reasonable.” A six-second spray, he said, has 50 calories and six grams of fat.

Food labels are allowed to say “zero calories from fat” if the amount of fat per serving is less than 1 gram, even though this is an untruth. There are 9 calories per gram of fat, so .25 grams means 2.25 calories per serving.

However, bear in mind that “the average consumer” actually uses 3 to 6 times the “serving size” as stated on the label, that means your calories would be 7 to 14 calories.

Learn more about the foods you’re eating by tuning in to April’s Serve, Taste or Trash Game! podcast when Mr. Divabetic challenges one lucky contestant to correctly identify which one of Chef Robert Lewis aka the Happy Diabetic‘s 3 delicious recipes contains the highest amount of sodium. Can’t Eat Just One? Now There’s Help

March 1, 2013
High Voltage

High Voltage

Can’t eat just one?

There’s a reason for that. New science shows that when we overload on sugar our brain receptors change, making it hard to regulate how much we eat. Worse. Scientists have also proven what the marketers (and everyone who has found themselves staring mournfully into the bottom of a once-full ice cream carton) have known all along—sugar is addictive. It lights up the same reward receptors and triggers the same cascade of feel-good brain chemicals like serotonin and dopamine as cocaine. Enough! It’s time to take control of your weight, your health, and your happiness with a program proven to help you beat your cravings and lose weight.

My good friend,  Energy Up! founder, High Voltage along with Reader’s Digest  is writing a new book about her amazing Sugar Savvy solution to help you lose weight and live a healthier way of life.

If you’re sick and tired of being sick and tired, ready to take action and prepared to pursue happiness, open to recognizing your trigger foods and willing to let go of excuses and negative energy please take advantage of this exciting weight loss program.

Can Eating Yogurt Make You Thinner?

February 19, 2013
Yogurt Lovers Are Thinner

Yogurt Lovers Are Thinner

Yes, it’s true! Research shows that individuals who consume yogurt on a regular basis are thinner and tend to have a healthier diet.

Low fat dairy has long been found to help reduce body fat, especially in the midsection (where dangerous visceral fat lies), which may be in part due to calcium’s crucial role in regulating how fat is stored and broken down by the body. New research now indicates that yogurt lovers may also eat an overall healthier diet, specifically one rich in fruits and vegetables.

Yogurt through research boasts many health benefits such as:

  • Improving heart health;
  • Lowering the risk of high blood pressure;
  • Reducing risk of type 2 diabetes;
  • Improves gastrointestinal health, including lactose intolerance;
  • Improves digestion;
  • Prevents osteoporosis; and
  • Strengthens the immune system.

The recent scientific study from researchers at Tufts University found that yogurt eaters have lower BMIs, smaller waist circumferences, reduced levels of triglycerides, improved fasting glucose and insulin, lower blood pressure and  higher HDL cholesterol than those who didn’t eat yogurt. In addition, those eating yogurt also ate more fruits and veggies,  whole grains, nuts, and fish.

Do you think there’s any chance the same goes for ‘frozen’ yogurt fans?

Why Weight Loss Can Turn Type 2 Diabetes Around

February 7, 2013
Weight Loss Pays Off

Weight Loss Pays Off

Not so long ago a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes at 50 or 60 seemed final, one of those no-turning-back kind of moments. Chances are the doctor told you the disease could be managed, but a return to a day when blood sugars might fall back into normal range (less than 126 mg/dl) was not on the table. An amazing new study, published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, reports that weight loss can turn diabetes around.

If you’re willing to make changes in what you eat and ramp up your activity levels, diabetes could be put into full or partial remission. (Makes you want to sign up for ‘Dancing With the Stars’ doesn’t it?)

Researchers randomly assigned 4,500 overweight people living with Type 2 to either an intensive diet and exercise boot camp-style intervention or a less stringent weight-loss education program.

Not surprisingly, the group given intensive diet and lifestyle counseling showed the most success. More important, 11.5 percent of the intensive lifestyle intervention group saw partial or complete remission of diabetes (remission was defined as blood sugars less than 126 mg/dl and hemoglobin A1c of less than 6.5 percent) at the one-year mark. Compare that figure to the other group’s success rate: 2 percent.

How Much Exercise Does It Take To Burn Off Those Super Bowl Snacks

February 6, 2013
Super Bowl Snacks

Super Bowl Snacks

We overeat more during the Super Bowl that we do at Thanksgiving! Hours of mindless grazing as we keep our eyes on the game and not on our plates can be the downfall of our diets.

Americans will eat 11.2 million pounds of potato chips, 8.2 million pounds of tortilla chips and 4.3 million pounds of pretzels, according to the Calorie Control Council. Plus, we’ll consume 1.23 billion chicken wings (12.3 million fewer than last year, though, according to Business News Daily), 111 million gallons of beer and 4.4 million pizzas, according to the Wall Street Journal.

How much exercise  would it take a 150-pound person to burn off  1,200 calories of Super Bowl snacks during the game?

Seven hours of yoga, a three-hour hike of walking at a moderate pace for  nearly 5 hours to burn 1,200 calories this way.

If you’d rather hit the dance floor it would take you nearly four hours to burn 1,200 calories.

Beyonce’s Diet Secret: The Lemon Detox Diet

February 4, 2013
I'm not Bitter, I Am Beyonce!

I’m not Bitter, I Am Beyonce!

Need to lose weight FAST for a big event? Like the Half-time show at the Super Bowl?

Many famous celebrities like Beyonce are turning to detox diets or ‘fasts’ and not Pepsi  in order to look their best in the shortest amount of time.

“I lived on water, cayenne pepper and maple syrup for 14 days. It was tough; everyone was eating and I was dying,” said Beyonce. But, in two weeks she reportedly lost 20 pounds.

With Awards season in high gear, the GRAMMY AWARDS are next week and I’m nominated for WEGO Health Activist Awards, I’m facing the same challenge of wanting to look my best on the Red Carpet in a short amount of time.  So should I jump on the ‘detox diet’ bandwagon? Is it healthy?

I’ll be discussing the Lemon Detox Diet with Constance Brown Riggs, MSEd, RD, CDE, the author of ‘The African American Guide To Living Well With Diabetes’ , and ‘Eating Soulfully and Healthfully with Diabetes’, on Divabetic’s upcoming free monthly Diabetes Roundtable podcast on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, 6-7 PM, EST. Show Link: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/divatalkradio1/2013/02/12/diabetes-roundtable-inspired-by-sally-field

The Lemon Detox Diet consists of fresh water, pure lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and natural maple syrup. The acid in the lemons claims to assist the cleansing process, and the cayenne pepper helps speed up your metabolism promoting circulation and a greater release of toxins from our bodies. They say that this detox diet will help you cleanse your body, lose weight quickly and make you feel better overall. (I’m always become a bit skeptical when I hear too many benefits!)

As a culture, we eat a lot of processed  foods, that we add very little nutrition to our bodies. What the creators of detox diets say is that these types of diets allow our bodies to naturally cleanse themselves, while we take a break from solid food. What do you think?

Watch News Yorkers try to identify the healthiest treat from three Serve, Taste or Trash! Food Game choices bought at a convenience store. You might be surprised by the results.
