Are Pop Stars Ruining Women?

American author, teacher and social critic Camille Paglia writes an arresting article for The Hollywood Reporter this month, on the current image of women in entertainment. Her prime cases-in-point: pop music pin-ups Taylor Swift and Katy Perry. (I’d love to hear what she’d say about Beyonce and her recent GQ cover!!)  Taylor and Katy’s popularity, Paglia argues, reflects a very peculiar schizophrenia in girls and women of the 21st century.

“Despite the passage of time since second-wave feminism erupted in the late 1960s, we’ve somehow been thrown back to the demure girly-girl days of the white-bread 1950s. It feels positively nightmarish to survivors like me of that rigidly conformist and man-pleasing era, when girls had to be simple, peppy, cheerful and modest,” writes Paglia, chalking out the area of her argument.

“Swift affects a “golly, gee whiz” persona of cultivated blandness and self-deprecation, which is completely at odds with her shrewd glam dress sense…[and] now 28, Katy Perry is still stuck in wide-eyed teen-queen mode…She’s like a manic cyborg cheerleader, obliviously whooping it up while her team gets pounded into the mud.”

“Most striking about Perry, however, is the yawning chasm between her fresh, flawless 1950s girliness, bedecked in cartoonish floral colors, and the overt raunch of her lyrics, with their dissipated party scenes. Perry’s enormous commercial success actually reflects the tensions and anxieties that are afflicting her base audience: nice white girls from comfortable bourgeois homes. The sexual revolution launched by my baby-boom generation has been a mixed blessing for those who came after us. Katy Perry’s schizophrenia — good-girl mask over trash and flash — is a symptom of what has gone wrong.”

While Paglia, a self-described dissident feminist, is often relegated to being outright pugnacious by her fellow drum beaters, nonetheless her latest article is quite a read. And if you want to know what else the professor thinks read her 1990 bestseller Sexual Personae: Art and Decadence from Nefertiti to Emily Dickinson.

Katy Perry’s Obama-Inspired Manicure

Some people support their candidate by donating money, others by slapping a bumper sticker on the car and a few even host fundraisers. But Katy Perryshows her support in a slightly different way: with her nails.

The queen of over-the-top talons flaunted her allegiance to the President earlier this week with a manicure that featured Barack Obama’s face, Democratic donkeys and patriotic stars and stripes. She debuted the left-leaning look at a fundraiser in Los Angeles on Tuesday, Tweeting a picture along with the caption, “Appropriate nails.”

Of course, the mani wasn’t the only way Perry lent support to the cause. She also performed at the fundraiser and shared on Twitter, “Today I am so honored to play for the President!”

MinxTastingRoom.com is selling the decal designs Perry wore for $19.95. And supporters of Mitt Romney don’t have to feel left out because the site is also offering Republican versions of the mani, complete with the former governor’s mug and little elephants.

Katy Perry Is Billboard’s Woman of the Year

Billboard has named Divabetic’s Diva Inspiration for July,  Katy Perry its Woman of the Year — capping off an impressive 2012 for the singer. And given how much she’s been able to accomplish over the past year, it’s unsurprising that the colorful pop musician has nabbed the coveted top spot as reigning diva supreme.

It’s been a dizzying year for Perry, who has made headlines for her music, her 3-D movie and, of course, her ever-changing hair, which has been every shade of the rainbow. Riding off the success of her Teenage Dream release, Perry repackaged the album as Complete Confection and gave fans several new tracks, including the feisty kiss-off “Part of Me” and the dreamy breakup ballad, “Wide Awake.” Not only would they prove as successful songs for the singer, but also would later earn her several VMA nods at this year’s ceremony.

“I had the idea to do a reissue, like that one last ‘wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am.’ Like, ‘Here’s Teenage Dream, if you’re on the edge of being a fan.’ … It’s for that last push of, like, ‘Jump in with me. Why not? You’ve already bought five songs, so you might as well complete your album!’ … But really, why I did it was because I know my fans always want more, so it’s for the die-hard fan to have a nice, complete package,” she explained about why she wanted to drop it.

In “Part of Me,” her 3-D concert documentary, Perry shared with her fans not only her hugely successful California Dreams Tour (which wrapped up at the top of this year), but also some of her recent struggles, including her divorce from comedian Russell Brand. It was an in-depth look at the superstar that celebrated the many facets that make her who she is.

“The truth will always prevail,” Perry explained earlier this year. “Everything has to be handled with integrity and appropriately, and it’s not nice to air all your dirty laundry, because that stinks, so I had to be very delicate with the situation, but I couldn’t avoid the elephant in the room,” she explained. “If you were to have seen that movie and walked out and [my breakup] wasn’t at all mentioned like it never happened, you’d be like, ‘Eh, this is weird, what is she trying to hide?’ I don’t like to hide.”

Every time Katy walked out of the house, sporting a new ‘do, it was news. She’s rocked blue, purple, multi-hued, and even her signature jet black hair over the course of the year.

And, her hair colorist, Rita Hazan, explained that it’s just in Perry’s DNA to always want to try out new hair styles. “The thing with Katy, she has a feeling, she follows her gut, her instinct and she’s very fashion, she’s trendy, but that’s really naturally who she is,” Hazan said. “She doesn’t try to do anything, she just does it and it works for her and I think because she’s such an iconic girl, people just want to copy and do whatever she does.”

Right now Katy is settled on her dark hair and her darker, more goth-leaning look. “I personally like where it is right now, kind of in the darker world and rock and roll,” stylist Johnny Wujek admitted. “She’s so rock and roll, she’s got her guitar; she’s always had that undertone, so I think it’ll probably go in this direction.”

It seems that for the time being Perry doesn’t have much planned. In fact, she shared over the summer that she really just wanted to take some time off and chill out for a while. And, given everything she was up to, no one can blame her.

“I’m gonna unplug, take my hair extensions out, feel my head again. I’m gonna unplug and recharge, if that makes any sense,” she said. “I’m gonna go away. I’m sure you know it’s time for me to go the f— away.” Reprinted from Mtv.com

Katy Perry Sparkles on the Red Carpet At VMA’s

Divabetic’s Diva Inspiration for July, Katy Perry wowed the red carpet in sheer Elie Saab gown. Unlike the usual crazy outfits we’ve come to expect from her at the event, Katy was fashion-focused in a undertated and stunning. The Wide Awake singer donned a sheer printed gown by Elie Saab, which she matched with Jimmy Choo shoes and a ring by Sethi.

The sweeping dress featured a sheer skirt, floral embellishments and a black leather bodice, helping to give a definite nod to next season’s gothic-glamour trend.

Allowing the teal and fuchsia accents to really pop, Katy’s make-up was minimal, while her dark, tumbling locks were wavy and swept to one side.

Katy was nominated for four VMAs: Video of the Year (Wide Awake), Best Visual Effects in a Video (Wide Awake), Best Art Direction in a Video (Wide Awake) and Best Female Video (Part of Me).

She had the honor of handing off the best pop video honor to Niall Horan of One Direction and showed her ‘teenage dream’ affection on stage with a kiss!  She puckered up after presenting them with the best pop video award for What Makes You Beautiful. Then,she gave the five lads an eyeful as she bent over in her low-cut black dress, revealing plenty of cleavage.

She’s  a fan of the British boy band, since she tweeted earlier today, “If One Direction doesn’t perform on the VMAs, I am gonna jump of this ledge.”

The star took to Twitter again after winning the prize for Best Art Direction.

She wrote: ‘Best art direction moon man is so hipster cool! YAY! #everyoneinsilverlakewildnout #peopleinsilverlakewouldntsaywildnout’.

The VMAs will have undoubtedly brought back painful memories for Katy, who began dating ex-husband Russell Brand shortly after a run-in at the VMAs in 2009.

The pair were married in October, 2010, but finalised their divorce just earlier this year.

Katy Perry’s Dramatic New Hair Color

Divabetic’s Diabetes Roundtable DIVA inspiration, Katy Perry has changed up her her hair color ONCE AGAIN!  It seems like only yesterday that  her famous mane was jet black (as were her bra and undies, visible through her totally sheer dress). But for her latest magazine shoot for L’Officiel Paris, she’s gone a shade of orange to bring out her inner ‘lioness.’

If we just ended a relationship with John Mayer, we’d want to ROAR too!

“That’s one way to get someone out of your hair!” declared People magazine, drumming up the cliche that life events like a breakup inspire drastic changes to our looks

It’s not the first time the pop star’s gone orange – she accidentally went ginger last summer followed by a two-tone orange ombre – but we actually like this new hue more than her neon blue, dark purple, pale rose, cotton candy pink… you get the point.

Unfortunately, it’s probably not here to stay. Katy’s hair colors are harder to keep track of than her ever-changing (rumored) boyfriends.

Would you dye your hair a different color every day if  you could?!

Experts agree its best to wait for at least 1/4″ hair growth, so about 4-6 weeks.

Katy Perry Wears Completely Sheer Dress

Divabetic’s Diabetes Roundtable diva inspiration for July, Katy Perry looks like she’s been listening to Joan Jett & the Blackhearts’ classic, ‘I Love Rock N’ Roll’ song for style inspiration this weekend. She attended a birthday party in Santa Monica, CA wearing a see-through dress — like, completely sheer. The black mesh dress has a very 80′s, Vanity 6,  retro vibe and revealed her bra,  panties and boots — it was floor length!

Party guests must have been’ wide awake’ once Katy stepped into the room wearing this revealing outfit.

The Part Of Me starlet wore biker boots, a leather jacket and a rosary straight from Madonna‘s Lucky Star jewelry box. We probably wouldn’t have even taken a second look at Katy’s outfit had it not been so blatantly risqué.

Is Katy starting a new trend?

She recently appeared at the MuchMusic Video Awards wearing a sparkly see-through bodysuit  which was a little too sheer for many audience members.

Katy Perry Confesses How She’s Feels About Adele

Divabetic’s July Diabetes Roundtable inspiration, Katy Perry has revealed that she’s over the moon for British singer Adele, who is pregnant with her first child.

With TV shows like The Real Housewives portraying the catty side of women’s friendships with other women, we’re thankful to share that these two celebrity women encourage and support each other.

Adele  announced earlier this year that she was expecting a baby with her boyfriend Simon Konecki and now the ‘California Gurls’ singer has revealed that she’s ecstatic about the baby news.

The ‘Someone Like You’ singer featured in Katy Perry’s recent film ‘Katy Perry: Part Of Me 3D’, where Adele has said some good things about the US star.

OK magazine quotes Perry as saying: “I love the fact that she’s going to have a baby. She’s such a good woman.”

She also added: “And she was really nice in my movie, saying nice things about me. I’ve always loved her.”

Are Katy Perry And Rhianna Co-Starring In New TV Show?

Divabetic’s July Diabetes Roundtable inspiration, Katy Perry will star with her good friend, Rihanna on the new TV show, Styled To Rock . This new Rhianna-produced reality TV program  puts fashion design hopefuls through their paces with the help of two of the worlds most fabulous pop stars.

Rihanna has also roped in British girl band sensation,  Girls Aloud pal Cheryl Cole to be a guest on the show, on which top designer Henry Holland and stylist Lysa Cooper are also mentors. (Wow! We can’t wait!)

Styled To Rock will see Rihanna and her diva pals searching for the next big thing in fashion design, putting 12 unknown designers through their paces for 10 weeks, at the end of which the winner’s creation will be worn by the  singer on stage in London.

Cheryl and Katy will join the ranks of Pixie Lott, The Saturdays, Tinchy Stryder, Little Mix, Katy B, Rizzle Kicks, The Scissor Sisters and Katy B, who will also appear as guests setting challenges on the show.

The series’ stellar credentials are rounded off by musician Calvin Harris, who devised the title music for the show and celebrity hairdresser Nicky Clarke, whose style team will create the overall looks for the designers’ to showcase their outfits each week.
