Serena Williams Criticized for Crip Walk Dance at Olympics

August 7, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic’s Diabetes Roundtable inspiration, Serena Williams was so overjoyed after defeating Maria Sharapova in the Olympic singles and winning the gold that she broke into a Crip Walk dance.

“It was just me. I love to dance,” Williams told reporters who inquired about her Crip Walk. “I didn’t know what else to do. I was so happy, and next thing I know I started dancing and moving. I didn’t plan it. It just happened.”

When one naive reporter asked what the name of the dance could be — “The Wimbledon?” or “The Serena?” — Williams said, “Actually, there is a name. But I don’t know if I — it’s inappropriate. It’s just a dance we do in California.”

“For the uninitiated, the Crip Walk is a funky little hip-hop dance move made famous by Crip gang members in Compton in the 1970s,” wrote Fox Sports’ Reid Forgrave.

Another Fox Sports reporter, Jason Whitlock, downplayed the so-called controversy, saying: “What Serena did was akin to cracking a tasteless, X-rated joke inside a church… Serena deserved to be called out. What she did was immature and classless. She made a mistake, something we all do.”

Others took to defending the tennis champ.

Serena Williams Wins Golden Slam At London Olympics

August 5, 2012

Divabetic SummerDivabetic’s Diabetes Rountable inspiration, Serena Williams became only the second woman to complete a career Golden Slam when she won her first singles gold medal Saturday by beating Maria Sharapova 6-0, 6-1 at the London Olympics. This final was so lopsided the  only people who were grunting were the audience!

The victory completed a remarkable run of domination by the No. 4-seeded Williams, who lost only 17 games in her six matches. She went 13-0 this summer at the All England Club, where she won her fifth Wimbledon title a month ago.

The career Golden Slam was first achieved by Steffi Graf, who did it when she won the Olympics in 1988 after winning all four major titles. Williams can add the gold medal to her 14 Grand Slam singles championships, the most of any active woman.

Williams was still hopping as she put on her Team USA jacket for the medal ceremony. Then she began to dance.

“I don’t think I’ve ever danced like that,” she said. “I don’t even know where the dance came from.”

These days, no one can match her moves.

Venus Williams Charges Forward with Doubles Win At Wimbledon

July 8, 2012

Divabetic TennisVenus and Serena Williams teamed up to win their 5th Wimbledon doubles title. With Serena by her side,  Venus whose career, badly affected by recent illness, seems slipping into its twilight  proved she’s still a major force in tennis.

Serena, 30, and Venus, two years older, have won 10 of the last 13 singles titles at the All England Club.

Saturday’s win over Agnieszka Radwanska took Serena to 14 Gramd Slam trophies and a new ranking of four in the world.

But in sharp contrast, Venus, whose first round defeat to Russia’s Elena Vesnina on the opening day was her worst at Wimbledon since 1997, is battling to still remain a contender.

The last of Venus’s 43 career titles came in Dubai in 2010 while her last Grand Slam title was in 2008.

Furthermore, she was diagnosed with the fatigue-related illness Sjogren’s Syndrome last year which kept her off tour from the US Open until the Miami tournament in March this year.

Many in the sport expect Venus, now down at 58 in the world, to quit after this year’s US Open and having had another shot at the Olympics, which will be held at Wimbledon.

Serena Wiliams Upset At French Open

May 29, 2012

It appears Serena Williams‘ run at the French Open will end almost before it starts.

Williams lost her first-round match to Virginie Razzano, who pulled off a 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 upset on home soil.

The 13-time major winner was two points from victory several times in the second set, but couldn’t pull off the win despite leading the tiebreaker, 5-1. Razzano won six consecutive points to force a third set.

“I made so many errors today, which isn’t the game I was playing in the past,” Williams said. “That’s life.”

Williams had won 46 straight first-round matches in Grand Slam tournaments. The French Open is the only Grand Slam she has not won multiple times — her last championship victory at Roland Garros came in 2002.

The loss marked the first time Williams failed to advance past the third round of a major tournament since the 2006 Australian Open.

Williams is ranked No. 5 in the world and appeared poised to be contender at the French Open following her victory overVictoria Azarenka on clay at the Madrid Open earlier this month. She entered Tuesday’s match 17-0 on clay this year.

Ryan Lochte Makes Vogue Magazine’s Cover

May 14, 2012

Vogue magazineThe June 2012 issue, Anna Wintour has permitted a Ryan Lochte to grace to cover, making him just the fourth man to ever cover the Vogue.

Ryan Lochte, a six-time Olympic medalist swimmer, is joined by Hope Solo and Serena Williams, both wearing ruched retro swimsuits (string bikinis are for Sports Illustrated covers). With the super buff Lochte photographed mid-stride, sporting a lady on each arm, the Annie Leibovitz-snapped cover has a strong “Baywatch” vibe. We half expected to see a bright red rescue board trailing behind them…

The theme of the cover, of course, is the 2012 London Olympics, which have already gotten a fair amount of attention from the fashion industry. Stella McCartney designed the blue and white “kit” (uniform) for Team GB (Great Britain), while Giorgio Armani did the honors for Team Italy. The U.S. uniforms are designed by that paragon of Americana, Ralph Lauren.

Although no one seems to be wearing much of any uniform on the June cover of Vogue, save for some swimsuits. Do you like the sunny, sporty cover or is it a bit too “Baywatch”-y for ya?
