Watching TV May Cause Type 2 Diabetes

Diva TalkRadio: TV & Diabetes

The Harvard School of Public Health published a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that links television viewing habits to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and premature death.  According to the study, more than 2 hours of daily TV viewing increased the risk for diabetes and heart disease while more than 3 hours increased the risk of premature death.  The study concluded that for every 100,000 people, two hours reduced viewing time could prevent the diagnosis of diabetes in 176 people, fatal heart disease in 38 people, and 104 premature deaths per year.

The Hefty Cost Of A Healthy Diet

August 10, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Food Aisle Face-Off

MSNBC reports that making healthy choices as per the government’s new My Plate guidelines is “going to cost you at least $7.28 a week extra.” The University of Washington study concluded that healthy heating should be accessible to all income brackets. While spending an extra $400 a month on groceries may sound unreasonable, there is a possibility that you could save on health care down the line.

Win At Losing Just Like Susan Lucci

July 29, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: Diagnosis To Diva

This blog post isn’t about weight loss, it’s about developing the ‘diva attitude’ it takes to turn lemons into lemonade.

It’s no wonder that most of us spend a great deal of our time thinking about the mistakes we make in life.  And not only did we focus on the mistakes we had made, we were repeatedly told to stop making them.

Throughout our lives we learn to hate being wrong. We don’t enjoy the embarrassment and negative attention that we get from blowing it, so we try to avoid it at all costs.

Many highly successful people have really blown it at one time in their lives. Our favorite poster child for ‘attitude is everything’ is the world’s most famous soap opera star, Susan Lucci. Susan Lucci’s losing streak began during the 1977-78 season and continued until she won the Daytime Emmy for Best Actress in 1999.  How happy she was to receive an Emmy after 18 losses? The audience greeted her with a standing ovation as she accepted the award. Today, she’s probably more famous than all her competitors combined!

Do you have to fail in order to succeed?

Many of us figure out the best way for us to accomplish what we want by learning from trial and error especially when it comes to diabetes daily self-care.  We see what doesn’t work, and by modifying or eliminating certain behaviors and focusing on what does work, we start moving rapidly toward the fulfillment of our desires. Now that’s the attitude – Don’t Get Down, Get Diva!!

Hear how real women living with diabetes turn their struggles into successes during our ‘Diagnosis to Diva’ segment. Tune in, log on to Diva TalkRadio – Diabetes Roundtable on Tuesday, August 9, 2011, 6 – 6:30 PM, EST. We’re podcasting with attitude! LISTEN NOW on #BlogTalkRadio  http://t.co/7y0JAYw

Diabetes Linked To Chronic Yeast Infections

July 18, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: Diabetes & Yeast Infections

What many women don’t know, is that recurrent and unresolved vaginal yeast infections can be a complication of diabetes. The diabetes and yeast infections connection is often overlooked.

A yeast infection, also known as candidiasis, is caused by an overgrowth of Candida Albicans. Almost three-quarters of all women will suffer at least one such infection in their lifetime.

Often times, symptoms of a yeast infection can go untreated because women are too embarrassed or self-conscious to talk about it. Although many women experience yeast infections, women with type 2 diabetes have them more often. Some women, especially those with poorly managed diabetes, have difficulty fighting off any infection. This means that once a yeast infection has begun, getting rid of it may not be that easy.  Treatment of a yeast infection is the same for people with, or without, diabetes.

Don’t Look At My Butt!

July 16, 2011

Diva TalkRadio: Don't Look At My Butt!

Everyone has (at least) one body part that we can’t stand. But what if you chose to see your “flaw” as “flawless”?

Here are some ‘Get Fitter With Glitter’ tips on how to terms with your body or ‘booty’ shape.

Why not work out by joining a group exercise program, whether aerobics or weight-training, walking or jogging, to tone your butt and your overall body. A fit and toned big butt is better than just a big butt. You can do extra exercises for your glutes to shape them up further. Sparkle when you sweat! We like to dress up to shape in  Juicy Couture Sweats. Consider adopting a better diet. Learn how to ‘Prada Your Pineapple’ and dress up your fruits and vegetables. And always try to aim to be a BETTER eater not a perfect eater to achieve the best results.

Be proud! Loads of the sexy celebrities are curvy like Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and Tyra Banks. Many guys like gals with big butts.

Evaluate your body shape.  Are you big all over, or is it just your butt that you think is big? Size is relative. You are unique. Change what you can, but accept what you cannot change.

Mother Your Diabetes: Wedding Day Routines

July 8, 2011

Listen to your diabetes mother.

Mama Rose Marie

We’ve all heard of the expression, “something borrowed, something blue.” I’d like to add to that and say stick with something that’s tried and true on your wedding day.  Just like your wedding day is not the day to try new makeup, a new hairstyle or a new self-tanner – it is not the day to start experimenting with your diabetes self-care. To read this entire commentary, click here and remember to tune into Diva TalkRadio for more of Mama Rose Marie’s self-care commentaries.

From Diagnosis to Diva: Ms. Angie

June 29, 2011

Divabetic’s From Diagnosis to DIVA stories detail the change in mindset from denial to acceptance of living with diabetes and moving on up. Meet this month’s DIVA, Ms. Angie. Find inspiration in “herstory.”

Ms. Angie, DIVA!

Name: Ms. Angie
Status: “Thriving” with Type 2
Diagnosis: May 1992
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

In Ms. Angie’s Words:

Special members of Ms. Angie’s healthcare entourage:

Terry Pennington, who allows me to bounce my ideas about natural health and what is healthy off of him. He is very supportive of my health goals. Pastor G.E. Jackson, who is knowledgeable about healthy liver and kidney functions. He has a massage therapy practice and has exceptional knowledge of modalities to aid the body in healing. Echo, who is a natural foods professional, nurse and colonic practitioner.

Motivating Mindset:

I have always believed since my first diagnosis that the body can heal itself, given the right fuel. I encourage others to find doctors who are in alignment with their health goals, and to get rid of the distractions which become obstacles to achieving health goals (soda, candy, fried foods, etc.). Finally, invest in yourself and know that anything is possible if you remove the impossibilities and put your mind to it.  Be conscious of the words that you feed yourself about “YOU” and remember positive attracts like and light.

Click here to meet Ms. Angie on Divabetic’s Diva TalkRadio and to hear her compete in Diabetes Numerology.
