Divabetic’s Diabetes Plate Poetry Project asks people living with diabetes “what’s on your plate?” The goal is to get people to describe the emotional experience of living with diabetes. Many of us reach for food to help us deal with stress, anger, hurt and resentment so it makes sense to use food as a way catalyst to being a conversation about diabetes and emotions.
An important component of diabetes self-management, but often overlooked, is the topic of emotional well being. People living with diabetes face numerous challenges in managing their disease on a day- to- day basis. Divabetic wants to encourage these individuals to stay positive and healthy in their self-management. Our mission to glamorize good health combines fitness, nutrition, style and positive energy. This video aims to assess the emotions associated with managing diabetes and the underlying reasons attributed to those emotions.

Divabetic is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to empower women to manage their diabetes self-care with confidence, inspiration and knowledge. Our national network of health professionals and diabetes educators provide expert advice on food, fitness and self-care management to encourage early action and prevention of diabetes health-related complications. Our mantra “Denial’s Not My Style,” encourages every woman, man and child to live healthy and to be bold, outspoken, educated and stylish like a true diva.
Divabetic was inspired by the late music legend, Luther Vandross and created in 2005 by Max Szadek, who, as Vandross’ assistant of 14 years, witnessed his boss, mentor, and friend struggle in silence and solitude with the diabetes and its related complications. Divabetic has grown from a grassroots movement to help empower Luther fans (African American women) affected by diabetes to a burgeoning and significant presence in the diabetes social media community. President Barak Obama, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter have acknowledged Divabetic for it’s dedication and determination on behalf of the diabetes community.

Is being a mom so tough that you need a glass of wine at the end of the day, just to feel sane again? More and more Moms say yes!
“Mama, needs her juice!”
It’s evidenced in Facebook groups like “Moms Who Need Wine” – with over 640-thousand subscribers. And “I So Need A Glass Of Wine Or I’m Gonna Sell Kids,” which has 127-thousand! There’s a best-selling book called “Naptime Is The New Happy Hour” and two rival wines called “Mommy Juice” and “Mommy’s Time Out.”
So, what’s going on with Moms and wine? Well, wine is to women what beer is to men. Women buy over 60% of wine sold, which is about the same percentage of beer bought by men. Also, some women view parenting as a gritty daily struggle – and they deserve a glass of Pinot for their hard work. So, wine makers have latched on to that mindset and they’re running with it! Take one of the biggest American wineries – Chateau Saint Michelle – their slogan is, “It’s where you become you again.” The idea is that “wine is the new bubble bath or valium.”
Now, of course, not all moms who enjoy a stress-relieving glass of pinot have a problem. But there are plenty that do. There is so much pressure on women today – to be the perfect mom, worker and wife – that some are abusing alcohol to cope. A survey done by “Working Mother” magazine found that 40% say they drink to cope with stress and the number of women between the ages of 30 and 44 who abuse alcohol has doubled. So, while this wine advertising is hitting its target – it may be enabling a bigger problem. By Betty Chase

Divabetic’s October Diabetes Roundtable podcast special guest diva, Leola from Grand Rapids, MI says, “ I am living proof that diabetes can be managed. It’s not a death sentence, diabetes can be managed. Control your diabetes; don’t let your diabetes control you.”
Leola, living with type 1 diabetes, learned firsthand the dangerous of poorly managed diabetes when she was first diagnosed. “Thanksgiving Day 2008 changed my life forever. I thought that I was suffering from an extended sinus infection that would not go away. I had lost roughly thirty pounds in less than 2 weeks. I decided to go to the hospital emergency room that night hoping for an IV or some medicine that would help me gain some energy.” Leola continues, “to my dismay, after testing, the doctor told me that I had diabetes with an extremely high blood sugar readings. I was shocked. I spent 6 days in the hospital (including 3 in intensive care). It was a very depressing time for me, but it gave me a lot of time to think about how I would handle the diagnosis. I knew that I wanted to continue to live life as I was (working, living independently, etc), so that meant that I had to be responsible for my well being. “
Leola’s feeling a lot more ‘divalicious’ today then she was at the time of her diagnosis. ”I have embraced having the disease and was determined to beat it. When I was properly diagnosed as a person living with type 1 diabetes (initially thought to be type 2 because I was overweight and 39 years old), that removed my hope of living without insulin. However, I am still determined to continue with the quality of life I had prior to my diagnosis. I have learned to successfully manage my diabetes. I have however gained the lost weight back and continue to struggle with weight loss.”
She credits her healthcare team and her support group: More Than Numbers in Grand Rapids (the brainchild of Leola’s good friend Rachel O’Callaghan) for her healthy mind, body and soul. “We are group of adults with type 1 and type 2, sometimes it’s just amazing what support can do to lift your spirits. We are like a family. We meet once a month, sometimes for educational presentations and other times just to vent with those that understand us. She adds, “if any divas are interested in peeping in on the group -join us on facebook – More Than Numbers Diabetes Support Grand Rapids.”
So what famous famous diva does Leola admire the most?
“Star Jones — As a plus size African American woman, I always thought that she was very intelligent and had a flair for fashion. She was someone that I admired and saw as a role model during my younger years. In more recent years, I have watched her career and love how she deals with adversity and still manages to rise above,” says Leola. (We’re guessing Leola’s not a fan of either Rosie O’Donnell or Anderson Cooper!)
What keeps her motivated?
“I’m in love with my independence; that alone motivates me to stay healthy. Prayer goes a long way with getting over the bumps associated with diabetes. Find the healthcare team that caters to your needs. Educate yourself; I spend loads of time reading and attending diabetes seminars. My diabetes life has been a blessing in disguise. It has caused me to pay better attention to my health. I have meet interesting people along my journey. I have been afforded an opportunity to do a few things that I enjoy as a result. I am a patient advocate for a program that allows me to travel and share my experiences.”

Mayra Rosales claimed she killed her 2-year-old nephew Eliseo Jr. when she accidentally rolled over and crushed him under her 1,100 pound frame.
But her lawyer knew something else was at play, according to “Half-Ton Killer,” a new documentary that airs Oct. 10 on TLC.
In 2008, Rosales was living with her sister Jaime in Sullivan, Tex. In March of that year, Rosales now says she saw her sister use a brush to hit Eliseo repeatedly on his arms, legs and head, according to the Daily Mail.
Later that day, Jaime Rosales went out, leaving her sister to take care of her kids, despite the fact that Rosales was almost completely bedridden because of her weight. Eliseo Jr. started suffering from breathing problems that night. He was rushed to the hospital where he later died, according to the Mail.
Valdez says she never bought Rosales’ original story that she crushed her nephew, especially after doctors determined the child’s cause of death came from being hit, not from being smothered.
“We knew something was wrong from the very beginning,” Valdez noted. “We said, we’re going to have you reenact [how you killed the child] and you can show us.”
However, when Mayra Rosales, now 31, was physically unable to demonstrate, “she broke down and started crying,” said Valdez. “We knew she was covering up for somebody.”
A press release from TLC, titled “Too Fat To Kill,” notes that “Mayra could barely move.” She was “deathly ill” from pneumonia and it required 10 men and an extra-large ambulance for her to reach the hospital when her health deteriorated later in 2008. She remains in the hospital today.
Mayra decided to come clean a few months later, after her sister continued to abuse her other children, according to Valdez.
Jaime Rosales ultimately pleaded guilty to causing injury to a child and is now serving a 15-year sentence.
“I’m really sad that my sister is in jail, “ Mayra Rosales said, according to the Mail. “but I think my sister understands now that her actions were wrong. I believe she can change and learn from what happened.” Reprinted from Huffington Post

Attitude really is everything. GLAM MORE, FEAR LESS!
A new study shows that having a healthy, “can-do” attitude is linked with good-for-you lifestyle choices like healthy eating, exercising and abstaining from smoking.
“Understanding the psychological underpinning of a person’s eating patterns and exercise habits is central to understanding obesity,” study researcher Deborah Cobb-Clark, director of the Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research, said in a statement.
The study included information from 3,412 men and 3,901 women between ages 15 and 69 who were part of the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey between 2003 and 2010.
The researchers found a strong correlation between a person’s take-charge outlook on life — whether they thought they had control over their own life outcomes — and actually living the healthier lifestyle, compared with people who perceived life as more “up to fate.”
They also found that men and women had different perceptions on what it means to be healthy: men were more likely in the study to want to see a physical result of their healthy lifestyle, whereas women were more likely to just enjoy the everyday benefits of living healthily.
The study was released as a “discussion paper” and has yet to be published in a peer-reviewed study; therefore, its findings should be considered preliminary.
Every little thing that could promote a healthy lifestyle — even if it is just attitude! — adds up. A recent study in the British Medical Journal showed healthy habits (exercising, eating right, not smoking) pay off even in elderly age. Karolinska Institute researchers were able to show these activities were linked with five extra years of lifeamong elderly women, and six extra years of life among elderly men.
Another study in the journal Aging showed that having a positive attitude (not to mention a good sense of humor, and low levels of neuroticism) was a shared character trait among centenarians – suggesting that these could be vital factors to living a long life, ABC News reported.
What are you waiting for? Now’s the time to join Divabetic on facebook and get your daily dose of diva attitude each and everyday.

NY Fashion Week just ended with our friend, Evetta Petty’s fabulous Spring 2013 Hat Fashion Show and we could barely fit into anything!
Even though we skipped dessert all week, ate salad after salad and drank nothing but water, we still could only squeeze into a pair of our size 4′s and not our beautiful size 0 Rag & Bone jeans.
We were hoping to look like Heidi Klum in Jordache or Brooke Shields in her Calvins but instead we ended up looking like we were wearing a pair of “mom jeans.”
What gives?!! Are we the only girl in the world (Thank you, Rihanna) who feels like insulin is making them FAT!!!!
Apparently the answer is ‘NO’
We found out that many people gain weight when they begin taking insulin. The reason for this is when your blood sugar was too high, many of the calories you ate were flushed out of your system in your urine. Since insulin therapy turns those calories into energy for your body’s cells, all those lost calories are now being absorbed, which leads to weight gain.
Weight gain may also be related to other complex functions of insulin in the body related to how cells use fats and proteins.
The good news is eating healthy foods and staying physically active every day can help prevent unwanted weight gain. THANK YOU! We’re making a date with the treadmill because were definitely not skipping our insulin dosages to ward off weight gain. It’s stupid. Although you might shed pounds if you take less insulin than prescribed, the risks are serious. Without enough insulin, your blood sugar level will rise — and so will your risk of diabetes complications. One of our close friends lost her vision from shortchanging her insulin dosages. We plan to see all the fabulous fashions for New York Fashion Week Fall 2013.
