Kim Kardashian’s Baby Weight is Normal

March 27, 2013

xkim-kardashian-us-weekly-story.jpg.pagespeed.ic.zDLGWSeekECan we leave Kim Kardashian alone?!! She’s not fat, she’s pregnant, okay?

Kim Kardashian divulged to a reporter this week that all the fat jokes have been bothering her and that she’s only 140 lbs and she’s been eating a lot of vegetables lately, okay?? Also, there’s a baby inside of her!

The fat-shaming that has followed Kim Kardashian is in some ways more of the same — more of what we saw with Jessica Simpson — but it’s much, much more. Both the volume of stories about Kardashian’s body and what headlines say about it remind us how acceptable it has become to talk publicly about an individual woman’s appearance in terrible ways. Why does this happen?

These articles also demonstrate how having a female body that is anything other than thin — whether it be average, overweight or simply pregnant — is being cast as both a crime and a punishment.

Here’s what one tabloid had said about Kardashian over the last few weeks:

Star considers Kim’s supposed 65-pound weight gain to be a “nightmare.”

You can argue that Kim Kardashian of all people welcomes any press, good or bad -but this is about way more than her. Bloggers Emma Gray and Margaret Wheeler Johsnson say, ” It’s about portraying weight gain as a central tragedy in a woman’s life, the cause of meltdowns and the source of insults, that then must be fought with extreme diets — even “while she’s pregnant.” It doesn’t take much for the average female supermarket-goer to think to herself, “Do people think that about me?” And just like that, weight has become a central drama in her life too.”

“These headlines affect us all, even when we tell ourselves we aren’t paying attention, that we write them off as trash. They leak into the cultural ether and affect how women see themselves and other women and how much time and thought and energy women put into fixing bodies that aren’t broken. When will we acknowledge that all of us, even Kim Kardashian, deserve to spend our lives thinking less about how we look and more about what we can do — and that the former definitely gets in the way of the latter?”

What’s in Tropicana’s New ‘Farmstand’ Juice?

December 18, 2012

FP458_TFSSB46_Ft_3D_V01Tropicana wants more people to drink its juice, so it’s extending a carrot – and a bushel of other vegetables.

As sugar-conscious Americans continue to shy away from fruit juices, Tropicana is using vegetables for the first time in recent history with a new drink called “Farmstand” set to hit shelves next month. By marketing the juice as a way for moms to sneak some veggies into their kids’ diets, the division of PepsiCo Inc. is betting that carrots and beets can give it a new avenue for growth.

The foray into the fruit-and-vegetable category comes after Tropicana executives watched Campbell Soup find success with V-8 V-Fusion drinks, which uncovered a sweet spot by making vegetables more palatable by mixing them with fruit. Since its rollout in 2006, Campbell has grown V-Fusion sales with multiple new flavors and varieties.

But Tropicana executives say Farmstand’s potential is far greater because it will be sold in the refrigerated sections of supermarkets. Shelf-stable juices such as V-Fusion, by contrast, are exposed to higher temperatures in the pasteurization process so they don’t have to be kept chilled.

Although the nutritional benefits don’t differ, Tropicana’s chief marketing officer Memo Maquivar said the refrigerated aspect of Farmstand will be a critical differentiator.

“Chilled is very important – it signals high quality, it signals premium, it signals freshness,” he said.

The rollout of Tropicana Farmstand comes as consumption of pure fruit juice has declined 6 percent over the past five years, according to the market research firm Euromonitor International. And Tropicana’s share of the category is down to 16 percent from 21 percent five years ago.

Now Tropicana is betting on Farmstand, its biggest product launch since the rollout of Trop50 in 2009. That drink has about half the calories of regular orange juice and is targeted toward people who are watching their weight.

By contrast, Farmstand’s calories are roughly the same as that of regular orange juice; an 8-ounce glass has about 120 calories and 28 grams of sugar.

Why ‘Steps & The City’ Not ‘Sex’ Make Winning Combination

December 6, 2012
Steps & The City

Steps & The City

Sarah Jessica Parker and the ladies might want to head over to the Walking Store and skip past  Manolo Blahnik  this holiday season.

New research shows that habitual physical activity that adds up to moving 6,000 or more steps a day may protect women’s health in midlife, because, whether through formal exercises or just the activities of daily life, this level of activity is linked to a lower risk for developing diabetes and metabolic syndrome in midlife women.

This was the finding of new research from Brazil published  in Menopause, the journal of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of cardiovascular disease risk factors, including but not limited to, large waist, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, that can also be a precursor to full blown type 2diabetes.

There is plenty of evidence that structured exercise is tied to health risks such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease, but this study suggests that habitual physical activity, whether through exercising or just having an active life, is enough to improve women’s health in midlife.

Dark Chocolate Boosts Brainpower in Seniors

November 27, 2012

Divabetic FallEating dark chocolate every day may improve thinking abilities in people with mild cognitive impairment, according to a new study.

Researchers enlisted older adults to consume either low, moderate or high amounts of flavanols in a cocoa-based beverage every day for eight weeks, and a link was found between the higher amounts of flavanols and improvements in tests of cognitive function.

Good news for chocolate lovers — the higher the concentration of flavanols, the better the people did on the tests — completing them more quickly and recalling more information, the researchers found.

The study was funded by Mars, a company that makes chocolate candy.

All study participants had mild cognitive impairment, a condition in which people have problems with memory or thinking that go beyond the normal age-related decline but don’t interfere with their daily activities. The condition can lead to Alzheimer’s disease.

Previous research has shown that flavanols have other health benefits, including improving blood pressure and insulin resistance.

“It is yet unclear whether these benefits in cognition are a direct consequence of cocoa flavanols or a secondary effect of general improvements in cardiovascular function,” said lead study author Dr. Giovambattista Desideri, director of the geriatric division at the University of L’Aquila in Italy.

For example, the improvements to the cardiovascular system may increase blood flow in the brain, leading to mental improvements, the researchers said.

Why Too Much Sugar is Toxic

November 19, 2012

Divabetic FallThe average American eats 2 to 3 pounds of sugar a week. That includes table sugar used in coffee, brown sugar used in cooking, soft drinks, sweetened tea and processed foods containing sugar.

While it is true our bodies need sugar (glucose) since this is the only fuel the brain can use, it’s important to note that a fully functioning body produces enough sugar for the body through the natural digestion of whole, unprocessed foods. By eating healthy carbohydrates like fruits and whole grains you can give your body all of the glucose it needs without ever having to eat refined white or brown sugar.

Refined sugar has been stripped of all of its vitamins, minerals and fiber and therefore does not digest naturally. In order to metabolize sugar through the kidneys, the heart is forced to work extra hard. On top of that, when sugar is released in the bloodstream, it causes an influx of adrenaline, which also puts unnecessary stress on the heart. Eating sugar before going to bed makes the heart work exceptionally hard and puts your health in danger.

Sugar also has addictive properties that make breaking the habit as hard withdrawing from some narcotics. The good news is that its possible to curb your sugar addiction according to Karen Ficarelli is the founder and CEO of Fitness4Her.com.

Karen Ficarelli says, “begin by adding one extra fruit to your daily diet each week or every two weeks. For each fruit you add, subtract one teaspoon or one source of processed foods such as cookies or cake from your diet. Substituting fruit for processed sugar will change your taste buds and train them to appreciate the fructose in place of the sucrose. It may take some time, but it will be a change that you can live with for the rest of your life.”
