One of the best ways to relax and unwind during the lazy days of Summer is to curl up with a great read and a glass of chilled wine.

According to Samantha Shanken Baker from Wine Spectator magazine the top 3 wines people drink in the summer are: Sauvignon Blanc, Reisling and Chardonnay.

So what’s a great wine to drink while you’re curling up with a great summer read like Best-New York Times Best Selling Author and Diabetes Advocate, Brenda Novak’s soon to be released book, Welcome to Whiskey Creek— When Summer Comes, out July 30, 2013?

Samantha recommends enjoying a glass of  TABLAS CREEK Rosé Patelin de Tablas Paso Robles 2012S as you turn the pages of this wonderful book. “It has a zesty yet delicate in style, offering a light peach hue, plus aromas of dried cherry and wild flower, with crisp flavors of apricot, watermelon and loamy spice and costs $20,” says Samantha.

In “When Summer Comes”, Callie Vanetta has withdrawn from the group of friends, taken a sabbatical of sorts from her wedding and family photography business, and moved onto her grandparent’s farm. She’s done all these things because Callie has a form of non alcohol related liver disease and without a liver transplant, this summer will be her last. Caliie puts off telling her family and her friends because she does not want to feel their sorrow or their pity. She wanted to enjoy the last days of her life without the burdens of trying to be brave or assuring others that she will fight for her survival. Did you know alcohol is processed in the body very similarly to the way fat is processed, and alcohol provides almost as many calories? This is why drinking alcohol in people with diabetes can cause your blood sugar to rise. While moderate amounts of alcohol can cause blood sugar to rise, excess alcohol can actually decrease your blood sugar level — sometimes causing it to drop into dangerous levels.

If you are in doubt about whether drinking alcohol is safe for you, check with your doctor.

This year, Brenda Novak and her team set a new record, coming in at $359,815 and smashing through the $2 million mark.  Wow!!

“This money will go to the Diabetes Research Institute to help make their new Biohub a reality–and, hopefully, cure all those like my son, Thad (who is living with type 1 diabetes,)” says Brenda.
