Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things: Leona Lewis

Mr Divabetic’s Favorite Things

I don’t know about you but for us the best part of the finals of ‘X Factor’ and ‘The Voice’ were two already famous divas, Celine Dion and Leona Lewis.

Celine Dion never fails to disappoint. This songbird only knows how to soar. She belted out ‘Love Can Move Mountains’ like nobody’s business that we didn’t even notice her duet partner, the eventual winner (oops, what’s her name!???).

Leona Lewis appeared on the X Factor finale and sang her new Holiday song, ‘One More Sleep’ from her first Christmas album. This the moment we heard this ditty we can’t get it out of our head.

Leona Lewis won the British reality show The X Factor in 2006 with several impressive performances of Whitney Houston classics. ( Need a Diva? Check them out on YouTube)  Since her ‘big win’ she has gone on to an impressively successful career, fuelled by her TV fame, powerhouse pipes and fabulous looks.

Leona Lewis is inspired by ‘Austin Power’s on this retro Christmas album, a coy tribute to the 1963 classic ‘A Christmas Gift to You From Phil Spector.’ She sings three tunes from the Spector album — a swirling Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), the big-band Winter Wonderland and serene Silent Night — and co-writes three of her own, including the jubilant album opener and our current favorite, One More Sleep and the cheeky pop ditty Mr. Right. Her strong voice and natural pep make the whole thing pretty fun.

Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things: Kelly Clarkson’s Wrapped In Red

December 17, 2013

Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things 2013

There’s no denying that we love, love, love holiday music. Two of our all-time favorite Christmas albums are Luther Vandross’ This Christmas and Mariah Carey’s first Christmas album, Merry Christmas (we actually own both of her Christmas albums. Currently, Mariah’s ‘All I Want For Christmas’ and Luther’s ‘Every Year, Every Christmas’ songs are  in constant rotation along with Darlene Love‘s Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home) and the Temptations ‘Silent Night’ on our i-Pod during the weeks leading up to Christmas. But that’s about to change thanks to Kelly Clarkson’s  new release Wrapped in Red.

The album’s song list ranges from a brassy ‘Run Run Rudolph’ to a ‘Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel’ and includes a few original songs such as ‘Underneath the Tree.’ The song, which Clarkson wrote with producer Greg Kurstin, is shaping up to be one of the most popular new Christmas songs since Mariah Carey introduced All I Want for Christmas Is You in 1994.

“The label kept pressuring us to make some hit classic song, and, we’re like, well, obviously, we’re going to try for that, but you never know,” Clarkson says. “I just wanted to make it something you could decorate the tree to or be shopping in the mall and hear – one of those fun songs that gets stuck in your head.”

Kelly Clarkson has a lot to forward to Christmas this year because her Christmas album, Wrapped in Red, has just been certified platinum, her holiday special, Kelly Clarkson’s Cautionary Christmas Music Tale, airs Wednesday (10 p.m. ET/PT, NBC), this will be her first Christmas married to Brandon Blackstock and she’s 12 weeks pregnant!

One of the healthiest eating habits you can foster in your family is to make vegetables the centerpiece of your holiday meals and let the other food groups accompany them.

Experts agree that all you need is to walk 30 minutes daily to notice some health benefits of walking everyday. You can even divide the 30 minutes into shorter periods of at least 10 minutes each during the day.  When you add running segments to a walk, you can experience a sense of joy not bestowed by other life activities. Our favorite shoe to fit an active lifestyle is Mizuno Women’s Wave Rider 15 which offers simultaneous cushioning and stability. We picked these fashion-forward sneakers because “curvy girls” love them! Many say, Mizuno’s offer the right cushion and light weight. These shoes are so ‘perfect’ you’re sure to buy them again! $103.45 with free shipping. Available at Zappos.com

Mr. Divabetic’s Favorite Things: Luther Vandross The Classic Christmas Album

It’s probably no surprise to learn that one of Mr. Divabetic’s favorite albums is Luther Vandross’s ‘This Is Christmas’ album. The truth is that he listens to this CD all year round, not just at Christmas!

For the album,  Luther Vandross wrote no fewer than 7 of the 10 outstanding tracks which all demonstrate why Vandross is still considered the preeminent male vocalist of all-time. As on typical Vandross recordings, the production is crisp and strong and the vocals are flawless. Plus, the cream of musicians and background vocalists (including the inimitable Cissy Houston and Darlene Love, who is featured on the Motown-like duet “I Listen to the Bells”) make this a record you can play over and over again.  Our favorite standout is the soulful slow jam, ‘Every Year, Every Christmas’ co-written with Richard Marx.

This year, SONY Music puts even more polish on this holiday treasure with the addition of four new songs, such as a previously unreleased live duet on “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” with  Chaka Khan. Luther Fans rejoice! The Classic Christmas Album is the definitive collection of Luther Vandross holiday music. $6.99 mp3 album downloads. Available at Amazon.com
