Can Carrots Help Reduce Symptoms of Diabetes?

April 19, 2013

carrotsStanford University researchers found that Type 2 diabetes patients “with a certain genetic mutation may be able to rely on beta carotene to reduce their symptoms.” Beta carotene is a variant of vitamin A— commonly found in carrots. Some with Type 2 diabetes have a gene variant, SLC30A4, which “codes for a protein that is involved with helping beta cells in the pancreas make insulin, which is critical for breaking down glucose in the diet.” Adding beta carotene may improve the pancreas’ ability to produce insulin and decrease the person’s risk of getting the disease.  Read More: http://healthland.time.com/2013/01/23/can-carrots-reduce-the-effect-of-diabetes-causing-genes/?iid=hl-main-lead

Mars kills the King Size Snickers

March 8, 2012

Divabetic: Snickers Gets SmallerMars is discontinuing its King Size Snickers bar, and even the traditional 2-ounce version of the chocolate bar is headed for the chopping block, as the candy company pares down its products in the face of America’s obesity epidemic.

The company has replaced the King Size Snickers with the so-called “2toGo,” which is two bars in one package. Each of the bars is 220 calories. The company said the package can be resealed “to save one for later.”

Mars also said its discontinuing chocolate bars that exceed 250 calories by the end of 2013. That means the days are numbered for its traditional 2.07 ounce chocolate bar, which weighs in at 280 calories.

The candy maker sees reducing portions is a way to help fight obesity in America — adopting the tone often heard from makers of other products facing health experts’ scrutiny such as alcohol and tobacco.

Mr. Divabetic’s Friday “WOW” Flashback

July 16, 2010

On Saturday, July 3rd, I was a guest on the radio show, Wright on the Edge, which aired on Washington DC’s WOL Radio.  Many of you may recall Divabetic’s two successful Makeover Your Diabetes events in the nation’s capital, so it was great to visit my DC friends via the airwaves.  Host Wendy Wright and I discussed issues affecting women living with diabetes, including the lack of time women actually spend with their doctors, which, according to many studies, is a mere seven minutes. Click here to listen to the entire show. I appear in the final segment.  I’ll have more to say on the topic of being a diva in the doctor’s office during the August 17th (3-4pm EDT) Clinilabs webinar, “How to Talk to Your Doctor.”  Reserve your seat online:
