Divabetic Podcast Inspired by H.E.R.

August 2, 2023

We’re talking about Intimacy Issues and Food Fears, especially of eating carbohydrates, on this episode of Divabetic’s podcast with musical inspiration from H.E.R. courtesy of SONY Music.

H.E.R. chooses to keep her true identity a secret, and H.E.R. is an acronym for “Having Everything Revealed”). She has received an Academy Award, a Children’s and Family Emmy Award, five Grammy Awards, and nominations for a Golden Globe Award, three American Music Awards, and four Billboard Music Awards.

Every day, people with diabetes) are bombarded with messages to limit, restrict, avoid, and feel guilty for eating carbohydrates. It’s no wonder that many people confess to being afraid of eating carbs. But your fears can undermine your ability to manage your self-care.

Frequent podcast guest Megrette Fletcher  M.Ed., R.D., CDCES offers advice and guidance for people who may feel afraid to eat carbs. She suggests to start becoming aware of when you think about carbohydrates as “good and bad.”

“If you notice you’re trying to be “good” by making “good choices,” that’s a red flag you may be stuck in a restrictive mindset,” she says. “The idea of being “good” often starts as an intention to make more informed choices, but when the reason you’re trying to “be good” is based on fear, something shifts. Fear can trigger guilt, blame, and shame, common triggers for overeating and bingeing. Click HERE for more advice from Megrette Fletcher.

Podcast guests include Dr. Janis Roszler LMFT, RD, LD/N, CDE, FAND (co-author of Divabetic’s ebook Sweet Romance: A Woman’s Guide to Love and Intimacy with Diabetes), Cheryl Farley, “Food as Medicine” Nutritionist, Dr. Dugan Maddux, and the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach.

Cameron Diaz What Are You Eating?

April 30, 2013

Divabetic Red Tomato Carpet

Divabetic Red Tomato Carpet

The best way to look from every angle on the Red Carpet is make sure you’re eating right. This is why the first question burning on Mr. Divabetic’s lips on the Red Tomato Carpet to ask a celebrity like Cameron Diaz is “what are you eating?”

With plenty of cash to hire personal trainers and private chefs, one of Hollywood’s hottest actresses might seem to have all the tools in place for perfect health but how does she avoid temptation?

Teddy Bass, Cameron’s trainer says: “Her diet is an upside down one where you have your carbs at the beginning of the day then taper off, so in the evening you just eat protein and vegetables.

“Cameron will eat junk food if she feels like it but if she fancies a burger, she’ll just have a few bites.”

Teddy Bass designed a diet plan for Cameron that requires her to eat 6 times a day. Cameron follows ‘no white’ diet plan. It means that white sugar, white rice, white flour, potatoes, and things made from white flour like bread, cakes, pasta, noodles, etc. is avoided by her.  In addition to the occasional protein shake, low-fat cappuccino, Cameron regularly drinks plenty of water.

“I used to eat fried food from morning to night when I was in my 20s. But I have really had to make some changes. I love fried chicken and french fries. I can’t do that anymore,” says Cameron Diaz.

Cameron meets with Teddy several times a week in order to maintain her “lean and strong” shape.

He explained: “Cameron has good genes but she makes working out a priority, so we train as often as we can. Depending on her schedule, we’ll do 45 minutes of Pilates or if she has 90 minutes we’ll do half weights and half Pilates and flexibility work.

“Cameron loves having a lean, strong body rather than a curvy figure.”

Aim to Expand Your Palate, Not Your Waistline At Neely’s Barbecue

August 12, 2012

Divabetic SummerOur recent trip to Neely’s Barbecue Parlor in New York City proved to be a dieter’s dilemma with the sweet smells of barbecue drifting through the air, and a dazzling array of summer cocktails to choose from including three different types of sangria. With so many delicious options, the temptation is to try them all and overindulge – which can lead to feelings of guilt in a diet gone awry.

But it doesn’t have to be that way!  The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic and  Charlie’s Angels of Outreach, three of the smartest and sexiest diabetes educators and registered dietitians, featured on the free monthly podcast Diabetes Roundtable offer their advice for enjoying the assortment of Southern temptations on the Neely’s menu as you battle the bulge:

Look at the “big picture” when planning and evaluating your diet.  Having a plan in place (and sticking to it) can mean the difference between expanding your palate and increasing your waistline.

“The American Heart Association’s dietary guidelines emphasize the characteristics of the total diet – over several days or weeks – rather than what one eats in any given meal or even on a given day,” said Pam Berneking, Board Member of the American Heart Association.  “This allows some flexibility in choosing foods and fits the theme of consuming a variety of foods and reducing guilt from splurging now and then.”

“A small amount of research can go a long way,” added Berneking.  “Decide in advance what you will eat and stick with your plan when ordering off the menu.”

Take control of the menu. Neely’s Barbecue Parlor embraces the talents of the Neely’s, featuring authentic barbecue, as well as their highly regarded Southern Style comfort food. The Charlie’s Angels offer, ” If you can’t resist Neely’s famous fried green tomatoes appetizer, share it with someone else, and choose fish, grilled vegetables or fresh fruit for the rest of your meal.  Of course, you don’t want to forget the salads.”

Ready for a glass of Green Tomato Sangria? The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic stops by  the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party to learn healthy ways to enjoy the barbecue  from everyday people.

Mr. Divabetic hosts Diva TalkRadio, a dynamic free online and mobile podcast channel featuring health care professionals, beauty, image/style and fitness experts, entertainment industry leaders and VIPs: women and men living with, at risk of and affected by diabetes.

Cameron Diaz’s Secret To Looking Good In Backless Evening Dresses

July 25, 2012

Divabetic SummerCameron Diaz looks just as good walking away as she does coming toward you but many of us are focused on what we see in the mirror that we ignore what we can’t see easily—our backs. Yet exercising the back may be far more important to our overall good health, now and for years to come.

Surfing and snowboarding help keep Cameron Diaz’s back strong and sexy. If you’re not the outdoorsy-type — don’t worry!  Cameron also gets plenty of indoor exercise too.

She works out with Los Angeles trainer Teddy Bass several times a week. During their sessions, Cameron does strength moves that engage her upper and lower body at the same time (like lunges with rows).  Key muscles contributing to a healthy back include those that pull your back forward, extend it downward and lift it upright. When you help those muscles become stronger and more flexible, you support the spine and protect your back from harm.

The happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic talks to Dr. “C” Corrine Morgan from Morgan Chiropractic Center in Philadelphia, PA about ways to keep your back (sexy) and healthy. Watch out, Justin Timberlake!

Check out Dr. Morgan’s funny, often enthusiastic responses to Divabetic’s ‘Wack or Wow?’ Healthy Back quiz with Mr. Divabetic.

February 15, 2012

Find out if Pole Dancing is a ‘Wack or Wow’ Workout on Divabetic’s Diva TalkRadio Diabetes Roundtable Inspired by Lucille Ball by DivaTalkRadio on #BlogTalkRadio.

According to Jessica Issler RD, CDE, there’s a lot of “wow” in a pole dancing workout. “The dancing part is where you get the cardiovascular benefits.” Then there’s “pole-tricking,” or doing specific movements balancing your body weight against the pole, such as the “fireman spin.” “That’s where you get the weight lifting, ab work and weight training.”

To get or stay fit, it is not the number of steps, it is how long and what type. For cardio-fitness, you need to walk 20 minutes at a time. Walking uphill and/or stairs will help with strength. The speed of the walk will also have an impact on cardio and strength.

Watch how you walk. Make sure your paces are equal and both feet are pointed forwards. Check your arm swings too, they should be the same on both sides. If one arm swings across the body, your gate is uneven, your strides are uneven of your feet are at different angles, make sure you don’t have structural imbalance, that can cause pain or other problems, down the road.
