Diet Busters: Popcorn At The Movies

January 6, 2012

Divabetic: Dining Out With A Dietitian

It’s dark, you’re distracted, and you have a 20-cup tub of popcorn in your lap. To your right sits a 44-ounce soda, and there’s a bag of peanut M & M’s in your pocket.

No nutritional horror story unfolds quite like mindless eating at the movies so what’s a dieting diva to do?

Mr. Divabetic and Charlie’s Angel of Outreach, Constance Brown-Riggs, RD, CDE provide silver screen snack  tips on Diva TalkRadio’s popular ‘Dining Out With A Dietitian’ segment when it goes to the movies.

“With the Academy Award’s are around the corner and so many people are heading to the theaters to see the  potential nominees, I thought it was the right time to dine out at the movies,“ says the happiest healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic.

“Personally, I’m satisfied watching actresses like Meryl Streep eat up the scenery on screen. I don’t buy popcorn!”

Superbowl Showdown: Chicken Wings vs. Pigs N’ A Blanket

January 5, 2012

Divabetic: Food Aisle Face-Off

Diva TalkRadio’s upcoming popular Food Aisle Face-Off segment features a SuperBowl-inspired Showdown between two half-time treats: Chicken Wings and Pigs N’  A Blanket.

We’ll be asking Foodie Judge Judi Wilcox, RD, CDE which one is the better option?

This could be a difficult decision because …. when you eat Chicken Wings you can’t avoid the skin and the truth is that the skin is what’s terrible for you! There’s going to be plenty of fat on your chicken wings under the skin whether you fry your wings or not,. Plus when you’re preparing chicken wings you usually add salt, which elevates your sodium, and then add hot sauce which has more sodium, and preservatives.

Pigs n’ a blanket are hot dogs rolled up in a crescent roll without or with cheese. Many people believe that hot dogs, like cigarettes, should come with a warning label that helps consumers understand the health risk. Additionally, these bite-size snacks are packed with fat and calories.

This rumble between two football game favorites promises to be quiet interesting. Tune into Diva TalkRadio hosted by by the happy healthcare host, Mr. Divabetic on Tuesday, January 10, 6 – 6:30 PM, EST. to find out the answer to our Superbowl Showdown.  Enjoy over 30 Diva TalkRadio show are available for free on i-tunes (search ‘Divabetic’) and at: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/divatalkradio1.

New Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders Give Processed Foods The Boot!

December 9, 2011

Divabetic: Podcasting with Pom Poms

I admit it! Last night, I got sucked into watching the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader: Making The Team reality TV show marathon (the season finale is this weekend on CMT.) Who knew the competition to be a “DCC” as they call themselves was so darn tough?!

You’ve got to smile (SMILE, SMILE!), look sexy, stay lean, have a six pack and kick HIGH (HIGH, HIGH) and I mean really HIGH. Several women auditioning for spots on the DCC Squad  are in physical therapy in an attempt to kick higher.

Believe it or not they were dispensing some great health and wellness advice to the DCC wannabes too. Several of the ladies were eating a lot of processed foods so they brought in the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader personal trainer, Jay Johnson, to provide healthy grocery shopping advice. Jay told the DCC contenders to avoid processed foods with more than 5 ingredients and that contain high fructose corn syrup.  He also says to avoid foods that your great-grandmother wouldn’t recognize as food– Go-Gurt (my goddaughter, Gianna, use to love this stuff!), breakfast cereal bars, non-dairy creamer — stay away!!

Here’s a word of advice for anyone who’d like to try-out – DO NOT POST PARTY PICS ON FACEBOOK. Kelli Finglass, DCC Director,  and Judy Trammell, the choreographer, kicked a woman off the squad for having too many drinking photos! (By the way, Kelli Finglass makes a tough job (cutting girls right and left) look easy with style and respect. She’s not trying to be Simon Cowell and we appreciate that!)

You don’t have to be a cheerleader to eat like one: For five days try not to eat anything with more than 5 ingredients or that contain high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, or artificial sweeteners. Let us know how you do!

The Hefty Cost Of A Healthy Diet

August 10, 2011

Diva TalkRadio - Food Aisle Face-Off

MSNBC reports that making healthy choices as per the government’s new My Plate guidelines is “going to cost you at least $7.28 a week extra.” The University of Washington study concluded that healthy heating should be accessible to all income brackets. While spending an extra $400 a month on groceries may sound unreasonable, there is a possibility that you could save on health care down the line.

Get free health and wellness advice on dining out and grocery shopping with the Charlie’s Angels of Outreach on Diva TalkRadio – Diabetes Roundtable. We’re podcasting with attitude!  LISTEN NOW:   http://t.co/57bxXb2
